Monstrous 64-foot ‘megawave’ spotted in the Southern Ocean

40AD7E0D00000578-4531686-image-a-19_1495485052581.jpgIt is one of the biggest waves ever recorded – and could reveal the secrets of the southern ocean. Researchers from MetOcean Solutions testing out a newly deployed bouy were stunned to find it recorded a whopping 64 foot wave on Saturday. ‘This is one of the largest waves recorded in the Southern Hemisphere,’ Senior Oceanographer Dr Tom Durrant said. This is the world’s southern-most wave buoy moored in the open ocean, and we are excited to put it to the test in large seas.’ The buoy was deployed in a collaboration between the New Zealand Defence Force and MetOcean Solutions. The team hope it will give valuable observations from this remote part of the ocean and help future ship designs…….Read More
